Dr. Suzuki told his students:

“Only practice on the days that you eat.”

Often parents are surprised that a music teacher expects regular practice sessions to be fit into everyone's already very busy schedules.  The teacher only has the time of the student's lesson to teach or revise techique and offer advice on how to practice.  The more regular a student practices, the faster s/he will acquire the new skills.  The teacher cannot fast track this and the hard work has to be done at home.

Suzuki's advice is excellent and by developing a regular practice routine, a student will not only benefit by advancing faster, but will also develop a useful life skill of learning good time management!.  It is however important to evaluate the quality of the practice sessions.  It’s not just about the length of the practice session, but what you put into every minute of your practice session!

When deciding to enrol your child in music lessons, the parent needs to be aware that extra time will have to be found every day to support and encourage your child.  The role of the parent is to guide their child’s practice sessions at home.  Practicing correctly helps students develop self discipline, perseverance, and an increased ability to concentrate.  If young children are guided in their practice by a parent, it prepares them to work effectively on their own as teenagers.
